Jersey City – A store owner was fatally shot this afternoon near Bergen Avenue and Newkirk Street in Jersey City, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed tonight.

The homicide the city’s 24th homicide of the year in Jersey City, surpassing last year’s total. Since Oct. 16, there have been nine shooting deaths in Jersey City.

The fatal shooting occurred at roughly 4:20 p.m. in the area of 905 Bergen Ave., police said in radio transmissions, and members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office’s homicide unit were on the scene a short time later. Representatives from the regional office of the state Medical Examiner arrived at about 6:15 p.m.

“The Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is investigating the fatal shooting of a store owner at 905 Bergen Avenue,” Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said in a statement this evening.

Details on the fatal shooting were not immediately available, but police said in radio transmissions that the shooting may have stemmed from a robbery.
